Angular Bob: Tress Trend

If you’re looking for a way to remain a cut above the rest, you may want to consider cropping your locks into an angular bob.

Actresses Keira Knightley, Jennifer Aniston and Ali Larter have all made the cut this year. Additionally, backstage at Betsey Johnson’s Fall show, models danced around in jet black, chin-grazing ‘dos. However, when I think of this timeless look, Vogue editor Anna Wintour and her signature strands always comes to mind.

“Keira made it hip again, but the bob never went out of style,” according to celebrity stylist Moulay Yacoubi. “It has always been a haircut that can transform you and make you look casual and classic.”

He adds, “If you go back thousands of years ago, there were bobs. This haircut has changed, of course. You can play with the bangs or you can frame the face to open up the cheekbones. There are no rules in cutting the angular bob, you just have to respect the geometry.”

Yacoubi sees this trend beyond straight on, and breaks down three different ways you can style your locks:

• If you are preparing for a night out and want to go for a retro, “Mad Men” look, set hair in rollers for 20 minutes. Release and then brush hair smoothly. Spritz with hairspray for hold while maintaining softness.

• Want to recreate Anna Wintour’s pin-straight strands? Prep strands with a silicone-based product like Bumble and Bumble DeFRIZZ or John Freida Frizz-Ease. Be careful not to apply too much product to avoid buildup or greasiness. Then flat iron the hair section by section.

• To play up your natural waves for a more tousled finish, start by blow-drying with a round brush and curl in random sections — nothing too perfect.

“The bob is right for every shape, but if you have strong features like a very pronounced jaw line, I would stay away from this cut,” said Yacoubi. “When it comes to choosing any hairstyle it has to fit you — your angles, bone structure and personality.”

Before submitting to your hairstylist’s scissors, the pro recommends asking:

1. Do you think this haircut would look nice on me?
2. Will it fit my features?
3. Am I the right person for this cut?
